About Your DJ.
Prologue.
I would first like to apologize for this shear amount of information included on this page. But the way I see it, if you're reading this, it's because you understand that wedding DJ is so much more than a person plays music from a playlist or has the most current tunes. A wedding DJ is an integral part of your ceremony. In many areas, the DJ you select will lead your ceremony and become an inseparable part of your overall experience. I believe that if you are taking the time to read this page, you are the type of decision maker who wants to know as much as you can about the person who you're considering placing in this critical role, because you recognize their contribution to your once in a lifetime occasion.
Humble Beginnings…
I will begin this journey, with my birth in Newark, New Jersey on the 18th of May 1972. I actually began my love of music as a songwriter at the early age of 8 years old. My father was a church pianist so there was always a piano in the house. My parents often tell the story of how they returned from a night out and were surprised to hear me playing music from the piano without ever being trained or instructed. I later followed in my father's footsteps and became a church musician as well, but I grew up immersed in jazz, soul, R&B, and blues music. My parents loved to party in their early days... as a matter of fact, my entire family loved throwing block parties and backyard jams that were out of this world. In elementary school, I began studying other instruments and singing in the concert choir. In high school, I was one of eight black students awarded a scholarship to attend Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey for their summer program. This was a turning point in my musical evolution because 400 students from cultures that I had never been introduced to before surrounded me. I left that program better well rounded as a singer, musician, and person. I graduated high school and immediately enlisted into the US Army. During my tour, I've traveled all over the globe being introduced to and immersed in the cultures and music of the world. I also got the opportunity to party like a rock star in some the hottest clubs you can imagine. Six years into my enlistment, in 1996, my passion for writing music inspired me to start my own production company. For me, those years were some the best for the industry... before everything went crazy; old school music was truly old school music and even hip-hop made sense. Luckily, I was still young enough to change with the industry, but I never forgot my roots or lost my appreciation for the way music used to be. After getting married in 1997, I began stepping away from my role as a producer and started stepping up into leadership positions as a church musician. As a Director of Music and Minister of Music, I learned to lead ceremonies with reverence and distinction. In my military career, I was promoted to the highest grade possible (E9/SGM) in 2008. I have since been a leader and counselors of the nations finest Soldiers and enjoyed that privilege to the fullest. Currently, I am a single full-time parent of two teens (ages 16 and 14). My children are the purpose for everything I do and they keep me on my toes, or as they might say, "hip" to the most current artists and dances. My life experiences are the source of my wisdom and maturity, but my children help me to maintain my youth. These qualities come together to allow me to connect with an audience of all ages.
How did I become a DJ?
My passion for singing kept me in the Karaoke circle. And when my Command needed a Karaoke DJ for a Unit party three years ago, they asked me for a recommendation. However, through a twist of fate, the message was given to my Commander that I was going to "be" the DJ, and when he made the announcement public, I felt like I couldn't let everyone down. I hired a company to provide the Karaoke and rented the equipment required to augment my laptop and humble USB interface to perform the event. It didn't hurt that I already had a pretty decent collection of music from a wide variety of genres. I was typically that guy who was always responsible for the music at house parties and family functions. Now, I'd being doing it on stage and in front of a much larger more critical audience of my peers. The event was an ultimate success and I couldn't get over how much I loved doing it. Word began circulating about my accomplishment and the requests began to start pouring in. In the years that followed, I used all of the revenue earned to purchase and upgrade my equipment and, in no time, I was being hired for larger events and audiences. The rest is history...
What makes me Different?
I have extraordinary passion for what I do and the talent and technology to match it. I built my capability with an uncompromising determination to have unmatched quality and professionalism. Three years is not a long time in any career, but when you combine it 30 years of passion for music and profession in leadership what you get is a leader who can move the crowd.
Why Weddings?
I have DJ'd clubs, corporate events, sporting events, and parties, but weddings are my personal choice because as a wedding DJ, I am able to bring all my talents and experiences together to provide a level of service that is beyond compare. Most importantly, I understand what is most important: You. Not me. I know how to compliment your celebration in a way that makes it the most memorable without creating a distraction. I was to be the most important factor and yet the least talked about. Your guests should leave your event remembering the time that had and the role they played in your special day.... not mine. Let's face it. Artists are egotistical, and DJ's can be very self-centered. You will find that I am nothing of the sort. I want to be where you need me and do nothing more than what needs to be done to facilitate the best night of your lives.
My Testimony.
During my wedding, the entertainment thought they were performing a concert and refused to acknowledge the requests from my guests. When I insisted that they play music that my guests wanted to dance to, they packed up their equipment and left. The DJ arrived late and his equipment was substandard. I can still hear the rattling speakers almost making it hard to distinguish our favorite tunes. Guests left before the party really got started. I left knowing that there had to be something better and we deserved to have a better start to our forever story. My experience only further galvanizes my commitment to making your wedding exceptional. No one should ever have a wedding day like the one I had; and no one who chooses Vince Brantley, as his or her DJ, ever will. This is my promise.
